As part of its continued practical support for Ukraine’s aviation authority, the State Agency Civil Aviation Agency hosted representatives of Ukraine’s Department of Aerodromes and Airports.
During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation briefed the Latvian side on the current situation in Ukraine’s civil aviation sector and the practical measures being taken to maintain infrastructure and staff competence. This will be essential to ensure that, once Ukraine’s airspace reopens, the country is able to receive and service civil aircraft.
“Ukraine’s airspace has been closed for several years, and civil aviation operations are not taking place. We are carrying out infrastructure maintenance to the fullest extent possible. During prolonged periods of inactivity, personnel lose their professional proficiency, so visits like this allow us not only to maintain our competence, but also to learn about and implement various European standards in practice,” said Lesia Hryhorieva, Head of Ukraine’s Department of Aerodromes and Airports.
Since 2018, Ukraine has been actively working to implement various European Union requirements. For example, between 2018 and 2022, five aerodromes in Ukraine were certified in accordance with EU requirements.
As part of the visit, the Ukrainian delegation also had the opportunity to visit RIX Riga Airport and learn about aerodrome oversight practices. The delegation was also introduced to airport operations, from passenger and baggage check-in through to flight operations.
The Ukrainian side emphasised that such exchange visits are highly valuable, as they help maintain links with airports and airport operators in other countries. Operators of Ukraine’s major airports are currently working to keep their facilities ready and have developed various plans for resuming flights under different scenarios.
Ongoing cooperation between civil aviation oversight authorities is essential to ensure that, as soon as flights to and from Ukraine are permitted, direct air services between Ukraine and Riga can be restored as quickly as possible.
